Age of Creation
In the beginning, the universe began. How this happened is a hotly debated topic among sages, philosophers, and priests of all faiths. The fact that it happened, however, is indisputable.
The existence of Litania is due to the intercession of Orr, The Creator. From the dust of the creation, Orr formed the sun; he then formed Litania, and Litania's sister worlds in their appointed courses about it. Seven worlds he created, and all their moons.
When the world was created, Orr created Kontifrio to share the world with him. Kontifrio gave birth to fourteen children, the gods and goddesses of Litania. For thousands of years the gods made changes to Litania, slowly bringing forth life of all kinds, and finding their places in the structure of it. Phrobus alone was dissatisfied with his place. He became jealous of his father and coveted Orr's place at the head of the pantheon.
The War of the Gods
Slowly Phrobus plotted. He created the races of Giants and the serpent folk to be his warriors. To the Giants he gave great size and strength, as well as the magic of the storms, and of fire, and of ice. To the serpent men, he gave powerful dark magics, and great cunning. Phrobus created other races, and other monstrous beings, until the day came when he rose up against Orr and sough to kill his father and supplant him as ruler of the gods. Thus began the War of the Gods.
The other gods, brothers and sisters to Phrobus fought back, but they had been taken by surprise, and began to lose ground. For a thousand years the war raged, both on Litania, and in the realms of the gods. Through the whole war, Orr stood silent, not taking one side or the other.
Phrobus raised up Shigu, a powerful Marilith demoness, to godhood. Over the centuries of war Shigu gave birth to the gods of the dark, and they took their places in the war. Eventually, Phrobus laid siege to the very castle of Orr and was sure of his own victory. Orr then made the first of only two decrees in the entire War of the Gods. He granted Talan the position of Captain-General of the armies of light, their last best hope for victory. He counterattacked, and slowly began to turn the tide of the war. Eventually, he challenged Phrobus himself in combat. After a day and a night of battle, Talan threw Phrobus out of the realms of the gods, down to Litania itself. Phrobus landed far to the north of the continent now known as Golarion, creating the hellish region called the WorldWound.
Orr looked down on Litania and saw what the Godswar had done, and grew sorrowful. The damage the war had wrought on the once beautiful world was terrible. He saw that Litania would not survive much longer should the war continue between the gods. He then made the second and final decree of the Godswar. Never again would the gods battle directly against each other, either within the material plane, or the celestial realms. If they did, their battles would destroy it completely, rending it from the inside. He banished Phrobus and his twisted children to their own domain, outside of the Materia.
The Age of Legend
Slowly, the world began to recover from the Godswar. With the gods at one remove from the Materia, the various peoples developed new ways to interact with the divine. Many peoples established a priesthood; a group of beings close enough to the gods to receive divine magic from them in answer to prayers. The priesthoods flourished and established temples for some gods. Other gods were less responsive to the prayers of those who sought their aid, and their priesthoods languished and, in some cases, disappeared altogether.
